The
following is a brief of what I remember as a Child.
I am presently 64 years of age, yet I remember things of 60
years ago!
First let me mention the one bad thing that I remember…
I was born in Alexandria Egypt in 1937 and I remember World War
2 very well.
As a Child, I remember crying, afraid of all of the bombings and
the distinct smell
of Ammonia during Bombing. I remember my Mom taking me to the
near by Shelter. (I remember that smell of ammonia as if it
were yesterday)
The Happy times that I remember.
I remember the first day my mother took me to school, I was 4
years old and she took me to a French School. (Saint Vincent de
Paul) I remember going to Saint Catherine Church and play in
front of this Church, in the Courtyard.
I remember going fishing with my older Brother Charles in the
River Nile, catching fish called "Bulti". They seemed
always hungry and they were easy to catch.
I remember walking my dog "Prince" by the sea. (We
lived walking distance to
the Cornish)
I loved going to the Movies and I still remember a few of their
names…I remember going to the following movie Theaters: (All
were then situated in Alexandria, Egypt) The Alhambra, Rio,
Rialto, Strand and the Royal. There were many others, but I
do not remember their names? I do remember a great Restaurant
that we used to go to after the Movies, it was called "Le
Bon Gout" (Not sure of the spelling?)
I believe that the name meant "The good taste"?
As you can see at age 64, I still remember things… good and
bad of 60 years ago!
A word of advice to all of you young Children, time goes by
quickly, do not rush things, enjoy your youth, have fun and try
your best to be good. If for no other reason, when you get old
like me, you will remember your Childhood for sure… Would you
not want to remember that you grew up being a good person?
I almost forgot, always be good to others, and if you wish to
experience true happiness, (Happiness of the heart) try to
be a giver instead of a taker… When you give something to
someone, smile and look at his or her eyes…(You will
experience something wonderful. Every time! If you already do
this, you know what I mean, and God bless you… if not, try
it…you will feel so good… I promise this.
In the mean time, I wish you and yours a good life.
Sincerely,
A. Dalli
